The 'thousand years' in Revelation 20 is a literal timespan, not a symbol. It began in 96 AD when the Beast (Emperor Domitian, the last Caesar to demand worship as 'Lord and God') was assassinated, and ended in 1096 AD with the First Crusade. The millennium was a heavenly reign of souls with Christ, not an earthly golden age of political peace.
